Rotha Chan becomes first local CEO of Manulife Cambodia

Manulife announces the appointment of Rotha Chan as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and General Manager of Manulife Cambodia, effective March. 20. Rotha Chan is also the first Cambodian to become the CEO of Manulife Cambodia.

According to a statement by the company, Rotha was Manulife’s first local hire in Cambodia when the company began operating in the country in 2012, initially staying with Manulife for eight years until 2020. Rotha has extensive industry experience and played a crucial role in Manulife’s development in the country while building Manulife Cambodia's agency channel to No. 1 in the market during his tenure.

Rotha earned a Global Star of Excellence in 2013 and was recognized as an Asia Young Leader of the Year in 2018 by Asia Insurance Review. Rotha was recently awarded the Royal Order of Maha Sirivudha (Grand Croix) by His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni, the King of Cambodia.

Sachin N. Shah, General Manager, Emerging Markets, Manulife, said: “We are very excited to welcome Rotha back to Manulife. Rotha’s experience, knowledge and relationships are well suited for the next phase of growth for Manulife Cambodia as we continue to build a better future for Cambodian families.”

Rotha succeeds Justin Helferich who has navigated Manulife Cambodia through a period of unprecedented external challenges while at the same time making significant progress to position the company for the future.

In addition to his responsibilities with Manulife Cambodia, Justin holds Vice Chair of the board of management of the Insurance Association of Cambodia and he has been instrumental in providing thought leadership and facilitating collaboration between the private sector and the local regulator to shape sensible regulations to promote growth and awareness of the life insurance industry within this market.

“In 2022, we proudly celebrated our 10-year anniversary.  Manulife Cambodia is well positioned and continues to thrive thanks to Justin’s leadership,” Sachin N. Shah added.

When launched in 2012, Manulife was the first international life insurance company to enter the Cambodian market and introduce people to life insurance products and services. The company has continued its mission to help build a better future for the Cambodian people. Manulife Cambodia is currently protecting the financial future of more than 101,000 customers and has paid nearly $10 million in claims so far.

Manulife Cambodia remained at the top in the market for First Year Premiums in 2022. It also paid out the first maturity benefit in the market and will pay out almost $1M to Cambodian customers this year.

Manulife Cambodia has also undertaken various welfare programmes worth more than $5 million under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. This includes: supporting government initiatives on road safety and helmet donation; sponsoring the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon; fundraising to support children’s hospitals; supporting Kantha Bopha Hospital; providing additional benefits to customers impacted by COVID19; and more.

Manulife was the first company to expand into the provinces of Siem Reap, Kampong Cham, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey and Sihanoukville to make financial protection accessible to more Cambodians.

Manulife Cambodia is part of Manulife Financial Corporation. With its global headquarters in Toronto, Canada, the company provides financial advice and insurance, operating as Manulife across Asia, Europe, and Canada, and primarily as John Hancock in the United States, serving over 34 million customers.
